Right, there’s an alarming amount of salt in our diet, that’s the reason why people are more prone to developing heart ailments and diseases, says a Phoenix cardiologist, Dr. Anne Marie Feyrer-Melk. There is a real danger in this element in our diet, however, only a few people really know why cutting down on salt intake is beneficial.

Low salt diet will help reduce the risk of stroke, and other heart health problems. How much sodium should you eat a day? You might not believe that your salt shaker only gives you a small amount of that. The large portion of sodium comes from other food items you ingest daily. Humans just need about 1500 milligrams of sodium in order to help keep the blood pressure low. With this amount, you will be able to reduce your risk of a grave illness such as a heart disease.

Sodium can be found in food we eat and drink everyday. The average daily intake of a person who does not limit the amount of sodium is at 3500 mg. That is 2000 mg more than the healthy range. Thus if consuming such a gigantic amount of sodium doesn’t make people sick, then the body must be too sturdy not to be affected by it. Every food item you can pick in the supermarket contains sodium. Even candies do contain it. Worst, the dried potato chips, pickles, and processed meats have very high content of salt. It would be best to monitor the amount sodium from the labels of food if you are serious in cutting down your sodium intake.
